Abstract

The purpose of this study was to serve as a basis for the development of community oral health practice, by examining dental hygiene student¡¯s subjective attitude toward that practice and what problems there were in that practice.
From among students who agreed to participating in this study, P sample was selected with 36 people, and 35 Q-sample was used to test them.
And the responses from 35 were analyzed by quanl pc program, except one who gave poor responses.
As a result, the subjective attitude of the dental hygiene students investigated toward community oral health was grouped into three categories:
The 1st category was raising a problem. The students who belonged to this type raised problems they faced during practice, and had a negative idea of dental hygienist¡¯s job enlargement. They made big complain of the lack of professional personnel, insufficient programs, or the shortage of facilities or finance.
Furthermore, they were greatly discontented with practice climate, job performance related to oral disease prevention, or student¡¯s voluntary involvement, and emphasized the importance of practice teacher¡¯s ability and attitude.
The 2nd category was seeking an affirmative aspect. The students who belonged to this type looked for affimative things rather than raised problems. Those students put stress on the importance of student¡¯s spontaneous involvement in oral health education or oral disease prevention.
Besides, they found it very meaningful to meet local residents or to bring a change to their attitude by oral health education, and felt proud.
The 3rd category was presenting a solution. The students who belonged to this type proposed a solution to various problems occurred during practice. They rcognized the necessity of oral health promotion and oral disease prevention for local residents, affirmed the need of maternity-child oral health management, and also found it necessary for public health dentist or dental hygiene to join oral health program more actively.
And they convinced the enlargement of community oral health project would serve to specialize dental hygienist role and widen career choice opportunity.
The above-mentioned findings suggested that, in order to upgrade community oral health practice in dental hygiene department, more successful practice program should be built to produce expert dental hygienists who would be able to contribute to community orla health.
